Who We Are
Since 1991, ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability USA (ICLEI USA) has led the nation’s largest network of local governments committed to sustainability and climate action. We are an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit, founded in Massachusetts and headquartered in Denver, with staff working in communities across the country. As an affiliate office of the global ICLEI network, we connect to more than 2,500 local and regional governments in 125+ countries.
Led by and for local governments, we meet communities where they are and provide the tools, expertise, and peer connections they need to advance their climate and sustainability work forward.

Our Mission
To build and serve a nationwide alliance of local governments, participating in the ICLEI worldwide association, to achieve measurable progress towards more economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable forms of development and management.
The ICLEI Pathways
Our Pathways framework helps members design solutions that balance people, the built environment, and nature. Communities choose the pathways that fit their goals, and we provide support every step of the way.
- Zero Emission – Measure, plan, and carry out emissions management to protect public health and provide energy security.
- Resilient – Strengthen your community’s ability to recover from expected and unexpected disasters.
- Equitable – A cross-cutting pathway to ensure that no one in the community is left behind.
- Circular – Reduce emissions by rethinking how resources are used, reused, and managed locally.
- Nature-Based – Protect ecosystems and biodiversity to support the well-being of human and natural communities.
