Joining leaders and experts from around the world, ICLEI USA’s Angie Fyfe will be speaking at a World Congress 2015 training April 8th, 2015 on building efficiency from 11:30am – 1:00pm. Additional presenters include the World Resources Institute, Korea Green Building Council, and the Global Building Performance Network in the Building Efficiency Accelerator Meeting Fyfe will discuss how public sector building energy efficiency opportunities can be targeted and implemented.
Energy efficiency is touted as a “low-hanging fruit” for cities to take hold of, in order to lower overall carbon emissions. Indeed, energy efficiency opportunities are well understood and implemented in a variety of settings worldwide. And yet, energy efficiency as a strategy is still underutilized. The International Energy Agency and United Nations Environmental Program estimates that energy efficiency can “stop the growth in emissions by 2020 with no net economic cost.” Therefore, UNEP created the Global Energy Efficiency Accelerator Platform under the Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) initiative, which was announced at the 2014 September Climate Summit in New York. The Platform will accelerate energy efficiency through an evolving group of Accelerators: appliances and equipment, buildings, district energy systems, lighting, and vehicle fuel economy. Participating cities will pledge to double the rate of energy efficiency and renewable energy deployment by 2030 and provide energy access to all.
ICLEI is actively seeking cities in the U.S. and globally who wish to make this commitment and take advantage of the SE4All resources. The City of Milwaukee, an ICLEI USA member, is the first U.S. city to participate.
This training session will focus on the SE4All Building Efficiency Accelerator, providing an introduction to its approach to working with local governments, and engage the audience in an interactive exercise to identify finance, public building, and energy code policies that will best assist cities in meeting their short and long-term needs, in order to double the rate of global energy efficiency by 2030. At the conclusion of the session, City representatives and partner organizations are invited to register for an individual consultation during the World Congress to explore specific opportunities.
Attendees are encouraged to also attend the World Congress session covering the District Energy Systems Accelerator, to be held on April 8th at 09:45am – 11:15am.
