It’s a mad, mad world out there…traffic congestion, cyclists braving distracted drivers, and would-be pedestrians without access to sidewalks. Can you imagine a car-free American city which is built around integrated, socially inclusive, and environmentally friendly options namely walking, cycling, wheeling and public transport options?
ICLEI has imagined it, and we are manifesting this vision via the EcoMobility World Festival 2015 in Sandton, Johannesburg. The vibrant core of this South African city will go car-free for the entire month. The Festival offers a view of the City in the future, with active street life and social inclusivity, served by a sustainable transport system.
During the month-long event, a one-week EcoMobility Dialogue will engage experts and stakeholders in discussions. The first stakeholder dialogue “Reshaping cities for ecomobility: strategies and tactics” was a day-long session featuring perspectives on how the urban landscape is affected by various mobility situations in cities around the world. Check back as we highlight eco-mobile activity in U.S. cities throughout the month.
