Efforts focused on the elimination of domestic fossil fuel uses are critical, but do not fully address the climate crisis if consumption patterns remain unchanged. From large infrastructure projects to purchasing vehicles, food, and consumer goods and services, supply chain emissions average about 5.5x the direct emissions of the organization itself. ICLEI is eager to target sustainable procurement and consumption in local governments to help confront the challenge.
This Supply Chain GHG Inventory Cohort provides structured technical assistance to guide ICLEI members through the steps of quantifying the greenhouse gas emissions associated with local government operations. The inventory can act as a baseline to inform local government procurement policies and programs to reduce environmental impact, create operational efficiency, and drive innovation.
The cohort will assist up to 12 cities or counties as they identify “top spend” categories for analysis and create a supply chain emissions inventory. This cohort will also share best practices from communities utilizing sustainable procurement practices as well as other avenues for direct action.
