Our Commitment to Local Climate Action

Following the recent election, ICLEI USA stands firm in our commitment to local climate action. With over 500 members representing nearly 83 million residents, we are dedicated to supporting cities, counties, states, and Tribal nations in driving sustainable progress. With over 30 years as a member-based nonprofit, ICLEI has grown to represent small and large subnational governments, with more than 1,000 local and regional governments as part of our global network.

Since 1995, ICLEI has been the focal point for the Local Government and Municipal Authorities Major Group, amplifying the voices of local leaders at global climate change and biodiversity convenings. As part of a network of over 2,500 local and regional governments, ICLEI is committed to sustainable urban development, actively engaging with governments in more than 125 countries.

A Legacy of Local Leadership

When the U.S. withdrew from the Paris Agreement in 2017, local governments across the country—cities, towns, counties, regions, and Tribal nations—reaffirmed their climate commitments, proving that real change happens at the local level. Local action has always been where real change happens, and with climate impacts such as flooding to extreme heat that are affecting communities from New Jersey to Texas, our collective efforts are crucial.

Become an ICLEI USA Champion

With the federal government potentially disengaging from climate action, the role of subnational governments is more important than ever. ICLEI serves as a focal point for subnational governments in the UN Climate Negotiations, and together, we are stronger in driving meaningful climate solutions.

To strengthen our network, we encourage you to invite peers in your region to join ICLEI USA. By sharing our commitment and amplifying local government voices, we can ensure that the global climate conversation remains focused on the action happening in our communities.

Looking Ahead

In the new year, we invite our members to join us in January for a meeting on Climate Action Budgeting. This session will explore strategies to maximize available resources to support you in climate action and adaptation planning and implementation.
