As governments aim to address climate change by mitigating emissions and adapting to issues brought about by climate change, equity needs to be a key aspect in all local governments planning efforts. In every community, there are community members who will experience the brunt of climate change, normally described as frontline communities or disadvantaged communities. These communities often face historical inequities while also being the most at risk for negative climate change impacts. When developing integrated climate action plans and sustainability plans, special focus needs to be placed on frontline communities to ensure that these inequities are resolved and not worsened by climate change. To address inequities in your community, you need to determine where the disadvantaged areas in your community are, what are the inequities they face and cooperatively develop strategies to reverse these inequities.
This three-part series provides important context, resources, and action steps to integrate equity and community engagement into resilience and sustainability planning.
