[Preview] Climate & Sustainability Communications Member Toolkit

This Climate & Sustainability Communications Member Toolkit provides all the necessary tools and guidance to promote effective messaging and delivery techniques within climate and sustainability communications. As an ICLEI USA member, your community can explore the following five guidelines to create and deliver meaningful and engaging messages to your audience.

  • Guideline 1: Understand Your Community’s Views on Climate Change
    • The preliminary reason why we need a people-planet-prosperity model of sustainability is to have a holistic approach that includes climate but also goes beyond to build public awareness and engagement. 
  • Guideline 2: Know Your Audience, Goals, and Metrics
    • Break down the steps to effective climate and sustainability communications, including understanding the purpose of climate and sustainability communications and key terms and deliverables. Utilize components of project management, such as utilizing a GANTT chart. Find six strategies to build a successful communications campaign.
  • Guideline 3: Leverage Local Priorities and Best Practices to Create Compelling Messages
    • Individuals can follow these eight steps to create effective messages through climate and sustainability communications.
  • Guideline 4: Use Multiple Engagement Tools to Reach All Residents
    • Employ engagement tools, including social media, newsletters, websites, and public engagement recommendations, that your community can use to share climate and sustainability communications messages. We showcase best practices, key performance indicators, and best examples of each tool and include a “Best Conveyed Plans” roundup of outstanding examples.
  • Guideline 5: Stay Updated on Best Communications Practices
    • Ensure your message is representative of your audience and heard by your community. Plus, resources for those seeking more climate and sustainability communications techniques.
