Session 1: Foundations for local and subnational engagement in the CBD
ICLEI Cities Biodiversity Center is launching a new webinar series to support local and subnational governments in engaging with the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) ahead of the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17).
Building on momentum from recent global convenings, this series focuses on how CBD processes work, how negotiations unfold, and how local governments can participate effectively. Each session provides practical guidance to help turn global biodiversity goals into local action.

This session introduces the structure and processes of the Convention on Biological Diversity, including its Conferences of the Parties (COPs), subsidiary bodies, and its relationship with other multilateral environmental agreements and the Rio Conventions.
Participants will learn how the local and subnational governments constituency engages in negotiations, including the role of ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability. The session also covers how negotiations work in practice and how city and regional representatives can participate strategically.
Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of how to engage in CBD processes and what to expect when participating in COPs.
