Goals and Objectives – Why Attend?

Local governments can improve their understanding and reporting of sources of emissions by including the Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use sector in their greenhouse gas inventories. ICLEI USA members often utilize ICLEI USA’s LEARN tool to conduct these analyses, quantifying the emissions and removals associated with undisturbed forests, land cover changes, and forest disturbances. One key output of LEARN is fire disturbance data, providing local governments with the area and emissions associated with fires that occurred within the inventory period. With an understanding of the area impacted and emissions associated, local governments can begin planning for nature-based solutions to mitigate future fire risks and impacts and to estimate the value of regrowth in disturbed areas.

The Wildland Fire Emissions Inventory System, developed by the Michigan Tech Research Institute, can enhance local governments’ quantification of the carbon and co-pollutant emissions associated with wildfires with in-depth calculation options and data outputs. Join this webinar to learn more about the methodology behind the tool, how to use it, and how local governments can leverage it to support their sustainability and resilience goals.

Key Takeaways: Participants will gain insights into:

  • How to use the Wildland Fire Emissions Inventory System
  • Potential local government applications of the Wildland Fire Emissions Inventory System
