Mayors are uniquely positioned to turn local challenges into practical solutions that protect residents, strengthen infrastructure, improve public health, and expand economic opportunity.
ICLEI USA and Environmental Defense Fund, in partnership with the African American Mayors Association (AAMA), are accepting expressions of interest for the 2026–2027 Mayors Climate Action Training Program.
Up to 10 mayors will receive foundational tools, tailored technical assistance, practical strategies, and peer support to advance climate action in their communities.
The program is open to mayors who are members of AAMA. Applicants do not need to be ICLEI USA members.
What You Will Experience
- Eight interactive sessions from October 2026 through June 2027.
- Expert guidance on disaster preparedness, resilient infrastructure, emissions reduction planning, community engagement, and funding strategies.
- Conversations with peer mayors about vision-setting, leadership alignment, and local implementation.
- Up to five hours of one-on-one technical support for each participating community.
- Practical tools and a clear roadmap to guide next steps.

Who Should Apply
The program is open to AAMA mayors whose communities are in the early or formative stages of climate and sustainability planning. Participants do not need a formal climate action plan. The strongest applicants will be ready to attend the sessions, engage with peers, and identify practical next steps for their communities.
