Richmond, VA, aimed to track progress toward its climate goals by updating its greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory and comparing it to past data. This effort built on Richmond’s climate action work dating back to its 2008 baseline inventory.
ICLEI USA conducted a 2022 community-wide GHG inventory using the Global Community Basic Protocol (GCP Basic). The project also included a quality assurance and quality control (QAQC) review of the 2018 inventory, a business-as-usual emissions forecast, and the calculation of a science-based target for 2030. A final presentation compared the 2018 and 2022 inventories to highlight trends and inform future mitigation strategies.
Richmond now has an updated emissions profile, enabling the city to identify key sectors for emissions reduction and accelerate climate action where needed. The comparison between 2018 and 2022 provides valuable insights to refine Richmond’s strategies and meet its long-term sustainability goals.
