Low-carbon communities contribute significantly to sustainability and global climate change mitigation. Since it’s inception in the early 1990s, ICLEI has developed innovative frameworks for local climate action, and today offers the most advanced and efficient emission management systems available to local governments.
While we work to slow climate change by reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, climate impacts are already here and are threatening communities’ livelihoods and economies. ICLEI is helping cities and counties prepare for the increasingly intense effects of the warming world.
Setting our relationship with nature on the right course, especially in times of crises such as COVID-19 are more urgent and important than ever before. Nature may be reaching irreversible tipping points of no return, and cities and our urban way of life, provide such amply opportunities to be leading this re-connect with nature.
The Circular Economy transitions from the traditional linear economic system of “take, make, waste or dispose” a.k.a. “cradle-to-grave” to “cradle-to-cradle,” in which products are designed to be used, reused, repaired, and recycled into new products in a regenerative process without resource extraction, waste, and pollution, such as composting. Local governments can implement a circular economy across all sectors through resource (formerly waste) management, procurement, policy, and planning.
Climate equity ensures that all people have the opportunity to benefit equally from climate solutions, while not taking on an un-equal burden of climate impacts. ICLEI’s mission is to support local governments in developing solutions to address climate justice through policy advocacy and strategies for more robust community engagement.
