Low-carbon communities contribute significantly to sustainability and global climate change mitigation. Since it’s inception in the early 1990s, ICLEI has developed innovative frameworks for local climate action, and today offers the most advanced and efficient emission management systems available to local governments.
While we work to slow climate change by reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, climate impacts are already here and are threatening communities’ livelihoods and economies. ICLEI is helping cities and counties prepare for the increasingly intense effects of the warming world.
Sustainability plans that include increasing energy efficiency and developing renewable energy sources lower energy costs, build energy security, and create healthier communities. From strategy to implementation to maintenance, ICLEI helps local governments to scale up smarter and cleaner energy.
A critical obstacle to the realization of climate action by governments is difficulty to access funding. ICLEI sets programs and networks in place to foster investment required for adoption of natural resources and energy-efficient systems, while minimizing future costs, environmental risks, and ecological damage.
Leaders on local and global scales facilitate and foster positive changes in climate and energy action, and are critical to progress. Through ICLEI’s campaigns, local government leaders are guided and connected, creating a network of advanced knowledge and motivation to build resilient, sustainable, and progressive communities.
ICLEI maintains its mission to address climate change through local initiatives, but we also acknowledge the essential need to motivate and accelerate our international peers to take similar aggressive action. Through collaboration, support, and inspiration, we are helping communities worldwide become more sustainable and resilient.
Collaboration between the public and private sectors is essential to addressing today’s greatest sustainability challenges. Together the public and private sector can reach goals more quickly and with more efficiency, while both achieve energy savings and create a healthier environment in their communities through reduction of their emissions.
