About ICLEI World Congress 2018
Every three years, ICLEI holds its World Congress to showcase how local and regional governments across our network are advancing sustainable urban development worldwide. The ICLEI World Congress connects them with their peers and strategic partners, and provides a platform for discussions that will inform and enhance their work.
At the ICLEI World Congress, hundreds of local, regional and national governments, international agencies, representatives of the private sector, academics and researchers, community groups and other partners from around the world will come together to steer the global sustainable development agenda by strengthening action taken in urban areas worldwide.
At the four-day ICLEI World Congress 2018, more than 50 sessions and workshops will be offered, allowing participants to learn more about how urban sustainability is an integral component of the global sustainable development agenda. They will look at how to strengthen collective action on sustainability, in a way that has local, national and global impacts.
The event will also offer a range of networking opportunities. Participants will share their experiences, stories and good practices on urban sustainability Together, participants will shape solutions and forge new partnerships that advance sustainable urban development.
The event offers a multitude of diverse opportunities for attendees to grow their networks and exchange ideas, whether through city-to city meetings, bilateral dialogues and webinars or via videos and posters exhibited throughout the venue.
From the founding World Congress in New York City, USA in 1990, the ICLEI World Congress has always taken a deep and critical look the most relevant and pressing issues in urban sustainability. The ICLEI World Congress is the core event organized by ICLEI. Each event is a chance for the network and our partners to come together and outline the future of sustainability in urban areas worldwide.

ICLEI World Congress 2018 will be hosted by the City of Montréal, Canada.
The City of Montréal is committed to sustainable development. Through its efforts, the city aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by 2050, ensure equitable access to its services and facilities and encourage exemplary innovation and creativity in sustainable development policy and practice. The plan is as ambitious as it is inclusive.
Since 2005, the city has focused on joint action between the community and the municipal administration, both of which have taken on a fair share of actions to build a more sustainable Montréal. For its part, the city plans to create 1,000 kilometers of bike lanes by 2020 and invest $10.5 million to improve service access, while encouraging local organizations to divest from fossil fuels and plan zero waste events.
As host of the ICLEI World Congress 2018, Montréal will show how it is leading the way towards a more sustainable urban future, bringing hundreds of local leaders together to build momentum on local sustainable action worldwide.
